HUSH ARBORS/JERUSALEM AND THE STAR BASKETS – “Mr.
Bones”/”I Cannot Radiate Without You”
This
single came my way when I grabbed up at a JATSB show at Mojo’s recently (see
website for show review in question) but hadn’t really paid attention to
because of my basic struggle just to survive these days. Hush Arbors’ contribution
on this record
”Mr. Bones” is a fingerpicked electric folk song complete with 12-string licks,
a minimal arrangement that borders on country, and a simple approach that
creates a near drone feel for much of the song.
Jerusalem
and the Star Baskets go in a different direction with the up-tempo “I Cannot
Radiate Without You,” whose driving beat and layered guitars create some of the
best art/noise rock this side of the Velvets.
Issued on a tangerine (I think)/lime sherbet colored 7 inch, this record
can be both familiar yet hint at something different also. I’m not totally certain
if this is still in
print but if you have a turntable, I recommend taking a chance and try to nab a
copy for yourself. (BOONE)
