MARNIE STERN – “This Is It and I Am It and You Are It and
So Is That and He Is It and She Is It and It Is It and That Is That” LP
I’ve
been meaning to nab this album for a while but kept putting it off until
finally getting the chance to get the vinyl when I saw her live recently. Stern’s
second album kicks through the
speakers with super high-octane songs that further blur the lines between indie
rock, noise, and instrumental shred.
Built on double hand tapped guitar lines, Stern and company takes the
listener into a journey that can go from catchy rock hooks to speed of light
riffing and back again. However, while
others may use Stern’s level of guitar technique strictly for solos, she
incorporates them into the songs themselves, creating layers where melodies and
hooks can veer into almost frenzied power anthems. While people into mershternative
and emo
might not get this, Marnie Stern continues to innovate by taking somewhat known
musical elements and aiming them towards the unexpected. This is It… is
one of those must have
albums of the past year. (BOONE)
