THE CIA MAKES SCIENCE FICTION UNEXCITING #5/$1.50
4 x51/2. Printed. 40pp
This is one of those zines I've been meaning to get to for a while but got distracted by everything else I've had
to deal with (I think we're all in that state these days). This issue of TCMSFU looks at the Iran Contra scandal of 1987
where we learned that the Reagan administration, despite their claims on TV that they didn't deal with terrorists, were selling
arms to Ayatollah Khomeini's Iran to fund the Contras in Nicaragua. Placing things in a historical context, they mention
not just the scandal but situations that led to it such as the US and British government's role in the mid 1950s overthrow
of former Iranian prime minister Mossadegh (who tried to nationalize the oil industry in Iran in the 1950s) to put in the
Shah (whose tyranny was so bad it led to Khomeini and the religious extremists taking over in 1979) as well as the scandal
itself. Taking both conspiracies as well as the facts, this doesn't cover everything but does offer plenty of insight into
a scandla involving a part of the world we too often either demonize or placate when convenient. Definitely check this out
for history's sake. (BOONE)
