SHANNON MURRAY - “Elated” CD
I was curious
about this album so I picked it up when I saw here play live at Diva House a
couple months back. On her most recent
disc, Murray
offers up a collection of intimate folk songs that touch on both the personal
and the political. Using just an
acoustic guitar and/or (on a couple of songs) a ukelele, these are often short
and sweet tracks taking of things from love and rejection to disgust at
hipsters to a songs confronting a rapist to fears and the like with a direct
and honest approach. While there appears
to be an Ani Difranco or Utah Phillips influence here Murray does offer enough
spark here to reveal someone putting her own spin on what folk can be. I know this
won’t be everyone’s cup of sake
but fans of singer/songwriter and more folky material will find a lot to enjoy
here. (BOONE)
