JERUSALEM AND THE STAR BASKETS – “The Howling” LP
I know this album has been out for a while (got it at their show a while back) but things
happened that kept me from fully getting to this until recently. JATSB’s full-length debut shows them taking their
folk/noise rock into songs that can veer from ethereal to wall or noise rock to elements of honky tonk and back within their
sonic identity. Using the wall of sound guitar and drums approach as their foundation, they build on this with acoustic
guitar and synthesizers to add new textures not always apparent in there live shows (which, in my opinion, are must see events).
Their songs are rooted in noise and psychedelia (with the latter more prominent on this album) without being beholden
to either subgenre, thus making rock n roll that’s tweaked, dark, irreverent, and takes you in directions you didn’t
expect. Jerusalem and the Star Baskets have never been the flavor of the month and their noise laden psych rock is all
the better for it. (BOONE)
