DEERHOOF - "Live Sessions" download EP

I picked this up when it came out a while back and was meaning to put it in the last issue but space constraints requeired a choice between this or reviewing their other recent release, Offend Maggie, so I had to push this back.  This download is a snapshot of Deerhoof live performing their unqiue type of avant/punk/indie rock for an itunes live session.  The six songs here manage to range form hard driving to obtuse and back again wioth an atmosphere where tight rhythms meet crunchy (yet sometimes fragmented) guitar sounds to create something that rocks while sometimes being miles away from rock music norms.    This band has always had their niche in underground rock circles and is best experienced live.  This EP gives a glimpse into what Deerhoof is like live.  WHile I wish it wasn't an itunes exclusive, this EP is a great aural glimpse into the live act of a unique band more people need to check out.  (BOONE)
