THE GOLDBUGS – “Star in the Corner” CD
I thought I’d gotten to this already but when I came
across it in the backlog I was surprised I hadn’t reviewed it yet; now it’s
time to rectify that. The first of two
pretty much simultaneous albums from local band The Goldbugs is concise, catchy
power pop with to the point melodies and clean, crisp songwriting. Detailing the
ups and downs of relationships
in its various guises, these songs have more hooks than a meat locker through
the layers of acoustic and electric guitars and rock solid in the pocket
rhythms. However, while the disc has
plenty of bright and cheery moments, there are also turns into darker and
angrier territory as well with a moodiness and use of feedback not so common in
the subgenre. In addition, there’s a
jazz influenced track here that takes things by surprise as well. While some of
the diversity of the sounds may
alienated those young kids who only think of pop in the post emo or mersh sense
of the term, this album remains a must check out for those who like melodic
well crafted pop leaning rock that doesn’t always fit the mold. (BOONE)
