JOEY CASIO – “Debtor’s
Prison”/”Artists in Times of War”
I
came across this single a while back and
while I’d listened a few times hadn’t gotten into review mindset with this
until now. Joey Casio’s latest single
continues the vibe he created with his split with Selector Dub Narcotic a few
months back. “Debtor’s Prison” is a
solid straight ahead dance track where a mid tempo vibe is carried through a
minimalist arrangement that builds as it goes from hook to melody and back for
something that takes you by surprise.
“Artists in Times of War” is more frenetic with a faster feel and all
systems go from the first arpeggiated note.
While only a seven inch single, these songs show that electronic and
dance grooves can on occasion have an authenticity that evades normal soulless
dance club fodder (i.e. what almost every dance party around these parts plays,
unfortunately). While it might not
convert anyone who really hates dance music, these two songs continue to show
that when it comes to making something real Joey Casio is off to a damn good
start. (BOONE)
