NETHERFRIENDS – “Calling You Out" CDEP
I was
supposed to get this in the last issue but was unable to due to space and time
constraints (especially vital now as we near the big triple digits). The debut
EP from Netherfriends is partly
ethereal, partly spaced out indie pop with layered production where synths,
guitars, and various percussion melds to create songs whose pop hooks are emerging
as much from the songs as from the sometimes dense aural dressing around
them. It’s a ride that borders on
shoegaze though sticks firmly to the pop side of the tracks. While there are hints
of influences on the
band’s sleeves here, Netherfriends have created an EP that shows what happens
when the effects and production are used to serve the songs, not vice
versa. Not everyone’s cup of sake but
this band could become one to watch out for down the road. Only time will tell. (BOONE)
