THE RAINCOATS - LP
I've been
hyped about this album ever since I learned it was coming out again. This is a
reissue of the
post-punk/experimental rock band's legendary debut album from 1979 (yes, you
read the year right). Taking a
minimalist approach that's crude and a bit confrontational at times (in part
due to the anyone can do it ethic of the era), the songs are forged with often near
skronk rhythm guitars, the occasional dissonant violin lines, and a uniqueness
that must’ve shocked the hell out of people when this was first released with
sheer force of sonic will more than making up for any lack of polish. Sonically
rough and deceptively simple, the
Raincoats’ debut is among the first in a musical offshoot of punk that would
spawn numerous bands and still sounds as different today as it did over 30
years ago. I know it’s only available on
vinyl at this point in time (at least here in America),
but I highly recommend
tracking this one down. It’s changed a
lot of lives and just might change yours.
