SPECTRAVOX – CD
I finally
got around to really listening to this after a couple of cursory listens over
the past month or two in the backlog pile.
On their debut, Spectravox plays melodic (almost to the point of mersh)
alternative rock full of bittersweet yet jangly guitars and a vibe that calls
the early and mid 90s alt rock bands to mind at times (think more They Might Be
Gaints or Cracker than Weezer). Lyrically,
these personal songs have a somewhat sardonic tone with a slight amount of
darkness and humor laced within as they sing of love gone wrong, hate, murder,
drinking, car crashes, and the like with a slight twist. Admittedly, the songs
do seem to wear their
influences on their sleeves at times but on disc there is a potential here
that, if nurtured and explored fully, could find Spectravox becoming a damn
good guitar based alt rock (for lack of a better term) band. Still, for a fairly
new band, Spectravox has
managed to create a listenable debut that should appeal to both power pop fans
as well as those people raised on the 90s end of “classic alternative.” (BOONE)
