D.O.A. – “The Men of Action” DVD
This coming our way was a very pleasant
thing and I’d been waiting for the chance to review it amidst the backlog et
al. This compiles videos of a number of
songs from this veteran hardcore band over the 30 something year career. There
are a few videos along with a lot of
live footage of shows ranging from the 1978 Anti Canada Day rally to San Francisco to Toronto to
a prison in Saskatchewan, Canada
and back
that show the band’s anger and pure energy in concert. Segued like a compilation
album, it goes from
video to live (sometimes one song from a show, sometimes a few back to back
from one show). Musically, this covers
pretty much all bases of their discography time wise from their earliest single
to their most recent album showing how punk evolved into hardcore in all its
power chord fueled loud, fast glory.
Added to this is the Anarchy program: a commentary from
vocalist/guitarist Joe Shithead on the band’s history played along with the
footage that needs to be heard to be believed.
This two-disc set also includes the Northern Avenger album that
we reviewed back in issue 92. While as a
longtime D.O.A. fan I admit my bias on this band, I recommend this DVD to all
fans of punk to see how it really went down.
