HORMONE JUNKIES – “Arsenal” CDWe were hoping to review this last issue
but deadlines and time constraints made us unable to do so and we had to wait
to include this here. The debut CD from
local duo Hormone Junkies serves up space rock meets electronica and noise
built on a combination of synthesizers, and a variety of guitar tones. What arises
from this is a sonic journey that
goes from ambient to near industrial noise to a frenetic mix of dance and
experimental and back again. On these
tracks synths and samples meld here with a blend of guitar feedback, eBows, and
guitar synth textures for musical twists that seem to emerge from nowhere but
manage to compliment what’s going on whether for prog style ambience or more
techno based concepts. Much like a film
score at times, the feel here is more based on mood yet the songs manage to
stand on their own here. Hormone Junkies
have created a disc that is haunting, a little surprising, yet something that
should satisfy those listeners who want to branch out and see what might be
possible outside of what they’ve expected from music. (BOONE)
