D.O.A. – “Kings of Punk, Hockey, and Beer”
CD
The
past few years have seen a number of compilation albums from D.O.A. so when
this came our way we were surprised by the direction. On this disc the Canadian
hardcore pioneers
collected songs they’ve done over the years (both released and unreleased)
dealing with three topics: punk rock, hockey, and drinking beer along with a
couple of covers. Focusing mainly on the
last 20 years, the band’s driving sound and high-energy edge comes through here
as does the band’s penchant for sick humor and the possibility of some of the
hockey themes being metaphors as well (especially as D.O.A. is often more known
for their sociopolitical material than anything else). Add their versions of wrestling
legend
Freddie Blassie’s “Pencil Neck Geek” and a demo version of BTO’s “Taking Care
of Business” and it makes an interesting sidebar between new albums. D.O.A.
fans will enjoy the hell out of this
album – and you know where we at TTWN stand on this band, so get this. (BOONE)
