MALONE – “Psychic Starts” CDEP I
received this when the band opened for American Aquarium a while back and due
to circumstances in my life I don’t want to discuss hadn’t had a chance to
review it until now. The second (or
maybe third) EP from Malone carries on the careful blend of power pop feel with
heartland cum alt rock sensibilities.
Full of tasteful guitar arrangements, the songs take the personal into a
slightly darker direction than their debut with some discontent becoming more
prominent in the mix as they sing of the falling apart of relationships,
breakups, and the like. The rock
influence comes through on one or two songs here more with a swagger and raw
vibe that wouldn’t fit on the poppier songs.
Malone’s sonic exploration of the pop and harder rock gray areas showed
what the possibilities could be for the band, though as news in this issue
points out, things would take an unexpected turn. Still, if you dig good power
pop and how it
relates to rock you will likely enjoy this.
