SLIM CESSNA’S AUTO CLUB – “Back Behind
the Barn” EP I
picked this up a little while back but due to a short-term job I had for a
brief period and a death in the family I hadn’t really been able to check it
out until now. This EP from Slim
Cessna’s Auto Club features a handful of songs from 2000 and 2001 delivered in
the band’s stripped down gothic folk/country sound. These tales of pain,
darkness and the like
are built on a variety of acoustic instruments taking the listener on a journey
that can go from an eerie take on string band music to vintage country music to
R&B influenced rock and back. At a
time when most of what’s called country music these days is more of a watered
down type of pop, this EP stands miles apart from the pack forging a unique
view of roots music that was explored more on later releases from them. This is
a piece of audio art that is
sometimes unsettling, a bit snide at times, but proves to be amazing in a
number of ways. Play this for someone
you know who only knows Nashville
pop and watch that person’s reaction.
