XIU XIU – Dear God, I Hate Myself” LPThis
is one of those albums I’ve been meaning to clue people in on for a while
(picked up the vinyl last time I saw them at Lemp) then I got diverted for a
bit so it had to wait until now. The
latest from Xiu Xiu finds the (now) duo taking their fusion of dance music, art
punk, and experimental music in a darker direction. Mixing acoustic guitars and
organic
percussion with electronica elements, heavy synthesizers, and a more airy feel
throughout creates juxtapositions from which emerges tales of loss and
survival. This album is a complex
journey that can be startling at some points and then have you in awe at
others. In other words, Xiu Xiu manages
to not so much raise the bar as re-imagine what it can be and start from there. Once
again this band treads the line between
art and pop and emerges with an album that demands repeat listens. Get this.
