BRAMBLE –
“Have a Great Summer” CDEP
I
got this when I saw the band play at the True/False Film Festival last spring
but hadn’t been able to listen to it until recently. Bramble plays driving
acoustic folk rock with
a punk attitude and a refreshingly honest approach. Using a combination of accordion,
percussion,
and guitar with occasional bits of banjo and charango, these personal songs are
heartfelt and often high-energy with a straight-ahead take that only increases
the music’s energy level. With as much
footing in traditional roots music as in punk/indie rock the band manages to
use their influences to crave their own place in the sonic milieu. This EP is
a pleasant surprise at a time when
too much new music seems to be merely imitating what’s hip (if not what’s popular)
these days. (BOONE)
