MASON REED
– “You Can’t Get Back From Heaven” CDEP I
admit I’d been a little hesitant about checking this out when I came across
this in the backlog given the glut of singer/songwriters can make one a little
wary. However, I was also curious so I
put it on. Reed’s music is on the rootsy
side of the singer/songwriter equation, often having a more blues and rock feel
with a blend of acoustic instruments and electric guitars. Reed’s vocals
are a bit on the rough side,
which is a welcome relief to the introspective clean vocals of too many in this
subgenre. Song wise, these personal
sketches show promise (even kicking off with a good hook) but there are one or
two songs that aren’t as strong as the others.
However, the potential here is obvious and Reed does have the arranging
skill and songcraft to keep moving forward (which is something that’s easier
said than done in music, believe me). I
know this won’t be every TTWN reader’s thing but those into more roots leaning
music or the singer/songwriter genre will likely find something worthy in this EP. (BOONE)
