BATUSIS – “Batusis” EP Once
in while a band seems to come from nowhere and makes you take notice. This year Batusis was that band. So after
getting a chance to see them live in
St. Louis last summer, I picked this up.
The debut EP from this band takes vintage rock archetypes and places
their own spin on them. Drawing from
surf rock instrumentals as well as classic boogie/blues rock and punk, the four
songs here are chock full of hard riving guitar arrangements, turn on a dime
hooks, and an energy that radiates through the speakers. Sharp and to the point, the music of Batusis
creates an aural world where good rock n’ roll remains vital and fresh in the
face of cliché (inevitable given the history of the band members). This is one of those records I wish I
would’ve gotten around to checking out sooner.
