JASON AND THE SCORCHERS – “Halcyon Times”
CD
One
of the big surprised of the last year around here was learning of the reunion
of Jason and the Scorchers with a new album and some live shows. So, after being able to see them at Twangfest
in St. Louis
last summer I had to get this for myself.
Their new album finds this veteran country punk band as tight as ever,
harnessing a blend of pure honky tonk country with in your face hard edged rock
and pure folk. Using this alchemy had
created powerful songs for the Scorchers in the past and this time around has
as much power as ever. Whether singing
of miners or the aftermath of greed or just getting older, these songs have an
honesty and emotion that’s rarely found in either rock or country music these
days with solid hooks leading the way throughout. Jason and the Scorchers’ first album in 15
years manages to both keep with their roots and sound refreshingly
current. This is one of those albums
that you really need to check out. (BOONE)
