ROY JAY – “Fairfax Avenue”
download album
I
meant to get to this sooner but given all the things I had to deal with in the
past year other things kept me from really listening to this until now. The debut (at least I think its his first)
album from Jay finds an artists lying somewhere between simmering electric
based blues and unplugged singer/songwriter material. Rooted in organic grooves and feel, these
songs unfold into stories where all may not be what they seem. There is a slight tendency to lean towards
the adult alternative radio tropes at some points. However, the best material here seems to have
a feel that owes a debt to Little Feat and the like. Fairfax
Avenue isn’t a completely
new take on the blues
but Roy Jay and his band pull it off better than a lot of others. (BOONE)
