HEATER – “God and Hair” LP
“How
do I start when it comes to this album?” was the thought that ran through my mind when I picked this up a while back.
The debut album from this Columbia supergroup of sorts (for lack of a better term) mines the early punk/post punk audio
field with some elements of Kraut rock, noise, and psychedelic music on occasion. Somewhat distant but overdriven guitar
tones and a straight to the point rhythm section help to create songs that are stripped down and a bit rough yet occasionally
take on unexpected textures or sounds. There’s a feel here that’s hard to pinpoint but comes through on
wax in a more melodic manner at times than their live shows, making the early punk and post-punk vibe of the songs more clarity
in the process. Heater has emerged with an album that, while somewhat standing off from the pack, should appeal
to punk and post punk fans alike. A good album that does require repeat listens to fully get everything that’s
on here. (BOONE)
