MARNIE STERN
– LP
Given all the
upheaval of the past year (deaths of people I know, an uncertain work situation
et al) it felt good to take some time for myself and catch up on some
music. Marnie Stern’s third album shows
her making leaps and bounds in her sonic vision. Blending her phenomenal guitar work and sense
of melody with influences from a variety of sources, these songs drop jaws on
the first listen only to keep you surprised as you listen onwards. Stern has always blurred the lines between
accessible rock and experimental guitar shred – and this album further
harnesses this quality into a sharp aural weapon. Part personal statement, part dramatic sonic
journey, Marnie Stern has dispelled any hints that her music is merely flash,
but that she dully intends on sticking around for the long run. This album more than deserves any of the
acclaim that it has gotten since its release.
