Things
have been a little crazy lately which means that I haven’t had all that much energy to really check things out, so while
I’ve put this on once or twice I hadn’t really been able to check things out until now. This is a video document of the band playing a show in Boston during October 1994.
As many of you might have experienced first hand (including myself) they immediately showcase an exploding sonic assault
of guitar based noise rock with tons of aggressive riffs and a rhythm section whose idea of a slow song still has the impact
of a kick in the chest. Sticking mainly to the on stage action it shows them
in raw form with a lot of piss and vinegar with shard like songs whose layers of sound is a shock of sorts (along with some
of vocalist David Yow’s stage antics). Also, included is an interview for
Hype TV after the end of the main show and a bonus 5-song shot at a 1990 show at CBGB’s.
While the audio production (with 5.1 surround sound option) seems a little cleaner sounding than when I saw them live
back in ’90 (that’s probably to be expected however), it’s still basically what you’d expect from
The Jesus Lizard in a live setting. JL fans probably already own this, but if
you’re just getting into noise rock, this DVD can be a good jumping off point.
