THE SKULL DEFEKTS – “Peer Amid” double LP
I bought this record
when I saw the band play live at Lemp earlier this year and have been curious about it until I had a chance to really listen.
The latest from this Swedish band is tense polyrhythmic art rock that at times is almost trancelike in nature. Terse,
semi minimalist guitars build tension over a pulsating steady beat that guides these aural journeys into a blend of personal
commentary within larger unease that’s hinted at throughout the four sides of vinyl. Moody and often dark, the
songs here often seem deceptively straight-forward but have layers beneath that compels repeat listens. The Skull Defekts
have emerged with an obtuse, hypnotic album that manages to rock as well as pique one’s cerebral matter. Within
these two 12” 45s of vinyl lie music that draws from a range of moods yet maintains a driving feel on one of 2011’s
more unique discs as a result. (BOONE)
