XIU XIU – “Daphny”/”Only
Girl (In The World)”
This is one of those singles that will evoke very little middle
ground both packaging and musically.
“Daphny” starts with a squeal of analog synth white noise before veering
into a blend of 80s inspired pop meets ambient dissonance in this story of a
woman raped by a cop while in custody.
The flip side is a reverse print cover of the Rhianna song where the
dance grooves head to a decidedly darker, almost dystopian direction that hints
at an ugly reality underneath the love lyrics.
Both songs walk a fine line between dancing and noisy catharsis to
create something oddly catchy yet more than a little unsettling in the process. Only
1,000 pressed but there should be some
still left on blue vinyl. (BOONE)
