THE RAINCOATS – “Odyshape” LP
When I learned this was being reissued I knew
I had to check this out. The second album from The Raincoats shows them taking on a sound that is both subtle yet more
experimental. Their skronky punk sound is melded with influences ranging from reggae to world music and a sense of experimenting
to create songs that are listenable yet have a vaguely jarring quality that’s hard to pinpoint. The band’s
sense of wanting to push boundaries is ever present here as they explore existential takes on being alone, body image, and
the nature of power within this aural journey to the center of the unexpected. Some my find this album to be challenging,
but those who pay attention while listening will be well rewarded for it. (BOONE)
