I
actually learned of this single online while searching for something else and found myself curious so I took a shot and downloaded
it (god, it feels weird saying that word). “The Silence Between Us”
is a catchy piece of pop/rock that highlights Mould’s penchant for taking pure melodies and melding them to punk heft
for a whole greater than either might have been if the song was just one or the other.
Electronic elements are filtered in (Mould did a foray into dance music in the early 2000s) and you see a return of
sorts of all elements of his career. The “b-side” (for lack of a better term) “If I Can’t Change Your
Mind” is a live version of the hit he had with his early 90s band Sugar with his current band taking it into a more
electric, rockin’ form than the 12 string gloss that drove the original version.
The downside of this single is it’s only available as a download thus shutting out any listeners that don’t
have their own computer to download (hint: seek a friend with a computer to help). And,
for those listeners who think they’ll just get the album, the B-side isn’t available on his new album and to the
best of my knowledge is only available here. Still, even with the possible hassles
of dealing with computers et al, it’s worth going online to find it. (BOONE)
