THE QUICK - “On Holiday With Earle Mankey” single
Learning of this single was definitely
a surprise indeed. This was a songwriting demo between the Quick and their producer Earle Mankey (Sparks, etc). “Bigger
than Life” is a trippy pop rocker about somebody resenting their war hero brother set to a backdrop of crunchy guitars,
spacey effects, and an ennui that’s both commercial and a little off kilter. The flip side (“Beautiful Island”)
is a moodier space pop blending elements of keyboards, reverb, and strange instruments to create an aural world unto themselves
that hints at Eno without fully aping him. Unreleased until now, this single walks a strange line between power pop
and glam rock with results that should appeal to fans of both subgenres. It’s a surreal musical journey but one
that puts a smile om your face. (BOONE)
