JELLO BIAFRA AND THE GUANTANAMO SCHOOL OF MEDICINE -
"Shockupy" EP
I've been
psyched to hear this for a while so when I finally got it I knew I had to make
time to listen. This EP is an appetizer
of sorts for Biafra and company, inspired sonically by current events. The title track is an ode to the Occupy
movement that places it in the historical context along with the New Deal and
also offers suggestions - all set to a hard rock catchiness that may be the
most melodic, if not outright commercial sounding, track Jello has done. The flip side starts with "Barackstar
O'Bummer," a full throttle punk rock song about the frustration regarding
the 44th President that tackles the difference between Obama's speeches, the
reality of her term in office, and the need for activism regardless. Added here is a brief change of pace via
Jello's collaboration with D.O.A. with the ska punk anthem "We
Occupy" (also on the new DOA disc).
The download (and digital versions) has an alternate take on the title
track that makes this EP overall an aggressive sonic call to arms and a teaser
for the upcoming Guantanamo School of Medicine album. (BOONE)
