OFF - LP
One of the big
shocks of the last couple of years was this band's emergence and their express
lane trajectory. Off's debut full-length
carries on the loud fast HC punk of The First Four EPs box set with
brief explosive blasts of straight to the chase rhythms and throw down the
gauntlet overdriven guitar. Delivered
with a mix of anger and precision, their songs range from mentions of punk rock
history to attacks on the growing class divide and freedom to fatal car crashes
et al. Off's late 70s flavored type of
HC punk doesn't necessarily come off as nostalgic (which can be a potential
possibility given the histories of the band members) but is energetic and direct. Surprisingly brief for an album (only
18 or
so minutes) Off manages to show how this kind of music can remain fresh and
still matter in a way that a lot of younger bands can't. Now I must go pick my jaw up off the
floor. (BOONE)
