JACK GRELLE AND THE JOHNSON FAMILY - LP
I got a copy
of this at one of the album release parties late last year and have been meaning
to get to this. On his debut with his
new band The Johnson Family, Jack Grelle and a semi loose knit collection of
musicians deliver a blend of string music and stone honky tonk country that can
be as visceral as it is heartbreaking at times.
With a wide variety of acoustic and electric instruments, the songs have
a directness that tells stories of life, loss, the road, and moving on among
other things. Eschewing modern
production gloss, the band keeps the focus on the song and lets the music shine
in the process in a way that much of what get called country these days simply
can’t evoke. Jack Grelle and the Johnson
Family’s style of vintage flavored country music isn’t glossy or poppy but it
is real. Get this and play it for those
people you know who want to shove pop country down your throat. (BOONE)
