MERCER AND
JOHNSON – CD
I got this when I saw them play Mojo’s a
while back and finally got around to sharing it. The debut from this duo is
a collection of
stripped down country leaning folk songs built mostly on mandolin and electric
bass (with an occasional acoustic guitar thrown in on two songs). Songs of failed
relationships, love, loss,
drinking, and moving forward in spite of it all are in full effect with the
focus on the vocals and a sparse, clean arrangement throughout these ten
songs. While Mercer and Johnson are not
reinventing the wheel, their direct approach to their music has an appeal that
goes beyond a lot of country and folk clichés these days. What you hear is what
you get with this duo –
and that’s not a bad thing at all.
