DAVID KILGOUR AND THE HEAVY 8s - “Christopher Columbus”/”Shifting Sands”
I was
unaware about this single until I was trying to get things ready and someone turne dme onto this single. “Christopher
Columbua” is a midtempo piece of NZ guitar pop that’s a mix of breezy and bittersweet with a jangly guitar lead
and bucolic yet somewhat oblique lyrics. The flip side is a cover of a West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band song that
draws upon the psychedlic twists of the original version. In both cases the songs draw on a 60s pop influence but infuse
it with a vibe that keeps the music from sounding completely retro. Kilgour’s history by now has been faily established
and this single is another step along the way. (BOONE)
