JACK GRELLE AND THE JOHNSON FAMILY - "Simple Needs"/"One Track Mind"
This single came out late last year but I hadn't had a chance to pick it up for myself (got one as a birthday present
for a friend) until recently. On this 45 Jack and country deliver two songs of vintage flavored country straight out of a
honky tonk frame of mind. "Simple Needs" is a straight up stone country track that lingers in the head and reveals
more with each listen. The flips side "One Track Mind" is a little more laid back with acoustic instruments and
harmonica taking the lead here. Both songs call to mind a time when country music wasn't prefab pop with a dobro or a fiddle
but tales of hard drinking, hard lives, and struggling to get by. I'd heard these songs live for a bit before finally getting
this but the single reveals subtleties here that need to be heard. This is a good stopgap between live shows and the next
album. (BOONE)
