THE HOOTEN HALLERS - "Chillicothe Fireball" LP
Picked this up when I saw the band play their New Year's Eve show at the Blue Note. On their new slab of vinyl the Hooten
Hallers build upon their raw greasy blues with an expanded palette (horns and harmonica playing a prominent role) and bringing
in hints of country at times (with an acoustic guitar leading the track). Throughout the album they sing of love, loss, and
life's struggles with a feel that’s moody and ominous yet for some reason makes you move in some way. This album
is a revelation both in the width of the band's aural toolbox after years as a duo and in the harnessing of the band's primal
sound to a point where progression doesn't neuter the edges. The Hooten Hallers continue to travel a music underground where
they're in blues and underground rock without necessarily being part of it. If you dig raw greasy blues or bands that take
punk energy into different musical styles give this platter a spin and make up your own mind. (BOONE)
