D.O.A. - "Smash The State: The Raw Original D.O.A. 1978-81" DVD
I admit that I've been excited about this ever since I first found out about it a while back. This DVD collects live
footage of this seminal hardcore band shot during the time frame mentioned in the title. Shot basically and simply (most
likely to VHS or maybe Beta), this simply shows D.O.A. in all their raw crude glory playing many of their songs that have
become classics as well as a couple of TV clips and interviews. Loud and angry this showcases the band's classic calls to
action with a near bootleg feel though a couple of songs are cut off before they finish (a minor distraction but one wonders
why they didn't cut those incomplete songs out). From a 1980 show in San Francisco to footage of a 1978 Anarchist Anti Canada
Day (featuring footage leading up to the event and a run in with cops beforehand), this is the early days of a band that would,
in the eyes of many, give hardcore punk its name and change lives along the way. This is what hardcore should be about so
get this and teach those young uns who only know the modern shit. (BOONE)
