PEARL JAM - "Lightning Bolt" CD
I thought this record would be a "Fuck You" to the "grunge" generation that Pearl Jam came up in (thanks
solely to location and MTV - though soundwise, they didn't really have anything to do with grunge), and it IS, but not in
the manner I thought, as PJ is BIG on the Jam-Band (no pun intended) scene; and yes, there are hints at psychedelic improv
rock throughout the record. But this disk starts off with some Fierce, almost Proto-Punk/Metal MC5 meets The Stooges vibe
before venturing off into the psychedelia. Mike McCready's guitar leads sound like a sober Johnny Thunders at times; melodic,
confident and bursting with energy. Eddie Vedder sounds youthful and exuberant, and the rest of the band is tight and vicious.
This is far away from the grunge era.... (PATRICK)
