MECCA NORMAL - "Empathy for The Evil" LP
I was interested in hearing this the moment news broke on this but delays at the pressing plant as well as the general
stresses and obligations on my end meant that I had to wait until I found the time to put it on my stereo. The latest from
Mecca Normal is a multilayered sonic gem where punk rock and ethereal moody art music meet. Built upon the band's bedrock
of (often raw and hard driving) guitar and vocals, the songs are occasionally fleshed out with saxophone, vibraphone, and
some keyboards, creating another texture to help lure in the listener to the audio tale at hand. Lyrically drawing from two
unpublished novels, the songs are narratives based on relationships, alienation, and a period epic of a woman's hardships
of rural life amongst other things. It's a sonic ride that challenges the listener both musically and lyrically, but it also
makes you realize why a band like Mecca Normal still stands out after 30 years together. (BOONE)
