SHAHMAN - "Demise of a Body" LP
I first picked up the cassette of this when I saw them play Café Berlin a while back but hadn't been able to fully take
it in until recently - and this is a disc that requires paying attention. On their latest album the Toronto twin brother
duo noise punk duo's music becomes an audio service of sorts in memory of their late mother. Blending a drone like deliberation
with heavy guitar wall of sound, the music is an interlocking piece that can go from lingering delicacy to a crushing intensity
on a moment's notice. Written and performed in one take, the album journeys through the cycle of losing a loved one and the
varying stages of grief therein. It's also a semi ethereal sonic journey where said emotions linger and wash over the listener
in the meantime. A project like this is a brave undertaking but Shahman pulls it off with an ease that is both confrontation
and honoring of a memory. (BOONE)
