DOWNTOWN BOYS - "Full Communism" LP
This is one of those albums I'd heard about (as well as bits and pieces of) but hadn't yet had the time to fully take
in until recently. Downtown Boys' debut is enigmatic punk rock that comes from left field and makes you take notice. Creating
a mix of fast-driving beats with saxophone driven hooks and slightly dirty guitar work which manages to be sharp enough to
cut through metal, the band uses their songs as calls to action as they take on colonialism, racism, misogyny, and other injustices
with English and Spanish lyrics to get the point across. What rises from this are short, unusual songs that come across a
bit different yet draws deep from a more diverse tradition of punk rock. Downtown Boys have received a bit of hype over the
past few months but their catchy, sometimes confrontational, art stands and exceeds what people may expect as a result. An
intense ride you need to listen to. (BOONE)
