RIP RAP - "Rip Rap Rips a Demo" cassette EP
I picked this up when I saw the band at Café Berlin back in May but wasn't able to really give it a review listen until
recently. The first release from the band's new four piece lineup finds Rip Rap harnessing their blend of indie rock, blues,
punk, and swamp pop into a moody sonic concoction where driving rock hooks suddenly reveal new layers amidst the impassioned
vocals and seemingly bittersweet yet rocking song hooks. Add to the mix the addition of sometimes ethereal, sometimes eerie
slide guitar and one discovers something more bubbling underneath these reverb tweaked guitar driven songs that lures the
listener in and gets their attention. Rip Rap's status is a little more flexible now due to band member moves (half the band
lives in St. Louis while the other two still live in Columbia) but they still manage to show how diverse good can be. Not
available online so if you have a tape deck or a friend with a tape deck this is the only way to get it - at least until the
reports of this getting released as an EP comes through. Check it out regardless. (BOONE)
