THE BRAINSTEMS - "No Place Else" LP
I''d heard reports that this had come out but circumstances have kept me from really listening to this until now. The
latest from The Brainstems is throw down the gauntlet garage rock forged by rough around the edges hooks, bittersweet and
sometimes fuzzy guitar tones, and a rhythm section that keeps things at a relatively mid tempo pace that seems more often
to simmer until almost boiling over rather than laying back. With a sometimes snide, sometimes detached tone, the songs are
occasionally oblique, personal observations for the most part thought one song is a commentary on how St. Louis county is
set up and the racial tensions underneath. While on first listen it seems not as dissonant as their live show the production
does give their songs more clarity and bring the band into focus. While the band can appeal to some noise fans their wheel
house is garage rock at its crudest and sometimes most sarcastic - which is what people curious about a band like The Brainstems
want to hear. Listen and decide for yourself. (BOONE)
