DOWNTOWN BOYS - LP
This band has piqued my curiosity lately with what I thought was their first album so when I learned they not only had
a previous album but it was getting reissued on vinyl I wanted to hear it. On their debut the Rhode Island based band delivers
driving high energy punk that walks a line between danceable beats and pure chaos. Singing in both English and Spanish, the
band throws down a sound where rough rhythm guitar fueled rave-ups meet with snakelike saxophone lines to create battle cries
that take on topics ranging from slumlords to rich boys to boredom with a critical eye tackling racism and classism along
the way. The songs are rough and a little frantic but the feel and attitude that would emerge with their next album, Full
Communism, is here in droves. This reissue finds a band whose sonic agitprop is fairly formed but more than willing to move
forward and evolve. If you're already into this band you know what to expect but those who don't know or are just curious
will see a band keeping the spirit of punk while smashing its expectations and remaking the shards into their own aural image.
