ALPHA HOPPER - "Last Chance Power Drive" LP
This came our way a while back but various obligations that kept
us from the review pile meant we couldn't give this a listen until very recently. The latest (debut?) from Alpha Hopper fires
off driving energetic punk rock songs that walks a very thin line between melody and noise. Heavy (bordering on corrosive
at times) guitar glides over frantic rhythms and songs that can glide from driving to dissonant on a dime. The aural battle
cries that arise here can be anthemic but also takes the listener by surprise along the way with an unexpected part or something
that shouldn't fit but does. Alpha Hopper creates an album whose adventures in sonic confrontation walks almost hand in hand
with a catchiness that hints that more may be bubbling beneath the surface. Worth checking out; I'm kicking myself for not
being able to get to this album sooner than now. (BOONE)
