PANSY DIVISION - Quite Contrary LP
I was hoping to get this reviewed last issue but space constraints unfortunately
meant I had to wait to review it until now. On their first album in seven years the pioneers of the first wave of queercore
unleash a batch of underground rock with footing in everything from punk to pop to hard rock with jangly/crunch guitars and
hooks that remain catchy as hell. Lyrically, they draw on the state of relationships in their ups and downs ranging from finding
the right person to New Years Eve kisses to disillusionment with soon to be exes, falling for friends, and more (including
religion being used to justify homophobia). The guitars are driving yet remain focused on the song throughout, much to the
delight of the listener, whether on their original songs or their cover of a Pet Shop Boys song. Pansy Division celebrates
their 25th anniversary with an album that harnesses both the band's punk rock energy and continues to apply it in unexpected
ways. This is a great album that should please long time fans like myself and hopefully draw some curious listeners into
the fray. (BOONE)
