WEIRD VIBERS - "Squirm" cassette
I got a copy of this at their tape release show (see earlier this issue
for review - ed) and was waiting for it to come up in the review backlog. The latest from Columbia's own Weird Vibers throws
down tense underground rock that plays with dynamics and hints at elements of noise and psychedelia in the mix. Chock full
of deliberate yet driving rhythms and terse guitar parts that can go expansive via delay/reverb and wah wah pedal at any moment
the songs are sonic observations that seem moody and semi-introspective but as they go on something more foreboding bubbles
underneath them. While the music can at times seem a little dirgelike, there's a feeling that simmers within until everything
explodes in the aural atmosphere causing jaws to drop in the process. The band has since gone on hiatus but I'm hoping they
return to action somewhere down the road - if for no other reason than I really am curious about what they'd do next. Kudos
to new label Tell Em I Said That Shit for putting this limited edition tape in our grubby mitts and letting us hear it. (BOONE)
