THE DOLLYROTS - Whiplash Splash LP
I picked this up when they played in St. Louis in late March (just two days before it was to be released). Once again
the Dollyrots throw down a batch of poppy punk rock where driving tempos and wall of overdrive guitars meet hooks that are
so gooey they almost get stuck in your teeth (or braces, for those with them). Luis and Kelly offer up a batch of personal
songs that tackle everything from the ups and downs of relationships to societal expectations of women to just carrying on
in the face of adversity, often with a sense of humor that's part dry and part sarcastic (occasionally at the same time) to
get the point across. It's a high-energy ride where the band's hybrid of punk and pop manage to become a potent weapon that,
in lesser hands, could backfire. While this album may confuse some people, its sense of sonic ferocity and pop song-craft
make it a definite bright spots in a time like this. Glad to have the chance to hear these songs. (BOONE)
