RIPPED GENES - Forever cassette
I picked this up recently when I saw the band play live and hadn't been able to really give it a review listen until now.
On his latest tape Ripped Genes offers up some lo-fi leaning shoegaze pop meets indie rock where guitars (electric and/or
acoustic) and drum machines create minimalist love songs that examine longing, loneliness, and the like. The music takes
on an approach that walks the line between low key moodiness, introspection, and hinting at something more underneath as the
album progresses. With a mostly DIY sense of enthusiasm and letting the music speak on its own terms, Ripped Genes create
indie personal songs that lure the listener in and set them up for impact. Hearing this tape reveals layers to these songs
that may get overshadowed in the band's live shows sometimes (I was surprised by some of the contrasts myself). Regardless,
Jon and company have created a tape that should appeal to lo-fi, shoegaze, and indie fans while leaving enough space for the
songs to grow in a live setting. (BOONE)
